Given that the Samurai are known for being “stoic” the beliefs of the Samurai and those of the Stoics are unsurprisingly similar. Living with virtue, courage, wisdom, and justice were just as much a part of being a Samurai Warrior as being a Stoic Philosopher. Both groups were aware of the limitations of desire, pleasure, fear and accepted the world as it was. Here I’ll look at some quotes by a few of the most famous Stoics (Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus). Although not directly written for the runner’s benefit, these quotes, and the thought behind them, are illuminating and can show us a way forward.
