Evolutionarily speaking, It’s argued that our group/herd mentality was the reason for our very survival. We, us humans, are exquisitely aware of our place in the group, as for most of our existence (as a species) being thrown out of our tribe would have resulted in our demise. This was the major reason we evolved as we did. Our inclination to follow along isn’t necessarily us responding to our individual psychosis, but to a system developed over millions of years. We know living is the actual goal of life, so, in this respect, we are being attendant to our survival imperative. We are ‘getting along’ (not rocking the boat) because it has hitherto given us the best chance of survival. Today, our day-to-day survival isn’t the problem it was but our fear of being ostracised can cause us to use this and other people as an excuse to avoid personal growth altogether.
